AW Exclusives

Aliyah Wallace has things to say, and chances are she’s going to put those things on a shirt. The Littleton-based fashion designer cuts the letters out of old T-shirts and uses them to spell out phrases like “Trans Rights,” “Dyke Power” and even “Bella, Where the Hell Have You Been, Loca?” (a Twilight reference, for those who are uncultured).

Wallace’s AW Exclusives is one of many small businesses, events and communities popping up in the growing realm of clothing upcycling and sustainable fashion. And sustainable fashion is in style in environmentally-conscious Denver, where people are becoming more aware of the waste created by fast fashion.

Based in Denver, she also runs Artists In Sync, a creative collective that hosts monthly art events for LGBTQ+ folks and allies. This venture has inspired her to continue to create spaces that are rooted in creativity, connection, and showing up as your full self.

Shoutout Colorado: Local Stories

I’ve been a very creative person my entire life. My creativity has been expressed in a multitude of ways and forms of media – constantly trying out new art skills and picking up hobbies keeps my creations innovative and new. It all started when buying second hand and thrifting was seemingly the only option for me to get new clothing and dress how I wanted to. I would buy something basic at the thrift store for cheap, and use whatever materials and skills I had in my belt at that time to revamp or “upcycle” the clothing pieces to fit both what was trendy and my current style.
